ABILENE --
Jamie Meyer hit a layup with five seconds to play Saturday afternoon to cap a furious second-half comeback and lead the ACU Wildcats to an 81-80 win over Central Oklahoma in a Lone Star Conference women's crossover basketball game at Moody Coliseum.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 7-3 on the season, while the Bronchos fall to 4-3 on the year. ACU will be back in action Monday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Northeastern State in another crossover game at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats -- who led by as many as eight points in the first half -- found themselves trailing 58-45 with 12:24 to play after an Ashley Beckley layup gave UCO its largest lead of the day.
But from that point to the end of the game, the Wildcats outscored the Bronchos 36-22 to pull out the victory.
Jody Meyer keyed the run by scoring 17 of her game-high 24 points in the final 12:07 of the contest.
ACU trailed throughout the second half until a run sparked by Jody and
Jamie Meyer,
Autumn Whitaker and reserve
Sara Montgomery got the Wildcats going. Montgomery had two huge 3-pointers off the bench, while Whitaker scored eight points and
Jamie Meyer seven in the final ACU stretch.
ACU trailed by six points (78-72) with 2:54 to play after a pair of Kasey Tweed free throws kept the Bronchos in front. But 12 seconds later, Whitaker buried a 3-pointer to get ACU to within three points, and at the 1:47 mark she hit a jumper to cut UCO's lead to 78-77.
The Wildcats finally grabbed their first lead since halftime with 20 seconds to play when
Jody Meyer grabbed the rebound of her own miss and put it back up and in, pushing ACU in front 79-78. The Bronchos, though, answered when Christina Yarbrough hit a layup with 15 seconds to play to give the Bronchos an 80-79 lead.
But after a timeout to discuss strategy, the Wildcats executed the called play and scored on a
Jamie Meyer layup on a feed from
Kat Kundmueller. UCO never got a shot off in the final seconds as ACU topped the team that has knocked it out of two of the last three LSC Post-Season Tournaments.
Because of injuries, ACU head coach Shawna Lavender only played seven players, but four of them scored in double figures, led by 24 from
Jody Meyer.
Jamie Meyer added 17 points, while Montgomery and Whitaker each had 15.
Jody Meyer finished with a double-double after gathering 12 rebounds, while Kundmueller dished out nine assists.
