ACU teams trying to get back to NCAA national tournament

ABILENE ? The ACU men's and women's tennis teams begin their defense of their NCAA Division II South Central Region team titles Thursday at the Eager Tennis Center.
The ACU women ? who last week won their 18th Lone Star Conference team championship ? will be the No. 1 seed for one of the regional tournaments, which will be played Thursday (May 7) and Friday (May 8) at the Eager Tennis Center on the ACU Campus. The Wildcats will be joined in the tournament by Washburn, Incarnate Word and Tarleton State.
On Thursday, Incarnate Word will play Tarleton State at 12:30 p.m. in the first semifinal match, followed by a 3:30 p.m. semifinal match featuring ACU against Washburn. The championship match is set for 10 a.m. Friday.
The other women's regional site is at St. Edward's in Austin where St. Edward's, Central Oklahoma, Northwest Missouri State and Northeastern State will be vying for a trip to the national tournament.
The ACU men ? who last week upset 11th-ranked Cameron to win the LSC team title ? vaulted to No. 1 in the region this week and will host Washburn and Southwest Baptist in a three-team regional. Washburn and Southwest Baptist will play at 10 a.m. Thursday with the winner playing ACU at noon Friday in the championship match.
Cameron will host the other men's regional with St. Edward's and Northwest Missouri State joining the Aggies in the three-team field.
The ACU women have advanced to the national tournament in each of the last 12 years, while the men are trying to return for the second straight year. The national tournament will be played May 13-16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
