ABILENE – Next Thursday night's 2009 season-opener at Shotwell Stadium continues to draw regional and national attention.
Last spring, CBS College Sports announced the ACU-Northwest Missouri State game from Shotwell Stadium would be part of the NCAA Division II national television package. Then Friday morning, ACU officials learned that Fox Sports Southwest and Fox Sports Houston would pick up the feed and carry the game.
For local football fans who might not have either CBS College Sports or Fox Sports Southwest, KRBC is going to pull the feed over from CBS College Sports and air the game locally.
In addition, a film crew from NCAA On Campus will be on hand to do a story for its next broadcast on how an NCAA Division II football game makes it onto the airwaves.
Thursday's game features a Northwest Missouri State team that enters the game ranked No. 2 in the country against an ACU team ranked No. 5 in the nation. Kickoff for the first game of the Champions Classic is 7 p.m. from Shotwell Stadium.
"We're extremely excited about the national and regional attention this game has generated," ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley. "We played two great games against Northwest Missouri State last season, and both programs should again be among the top teams in the nation in 2009 and that should make for another exciting game. But even though the game is going to be televised, we'd still love to see those stands at Shotwell full of fans wearing purple and white."
Jason Knapp will be doing the play-by-play for the broadcast, while former University of Michigan tight end Derrick Walker will be the analyst. Walker was a member of 1986 and 1988 Big Ten championship teams before going on to a nine-year NFL career with San Diego and Kansas City.
ACU senior and broadcast journalism major Kimberly Prather will work as the sideline reporter, rounding out the broadcast crew.
