ABILENE – The ACU women's soccer team kicked off the 2009 season in unprecedented fashion Friday evening with a 1-0 win over 14th-ranked Central Missouri at The Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
A goal from Julie Coppedge early in the second half proved to be enough for the win. It marked the first win over a nationally ranked opponent in the Wildcats' young history.
The Jennies from Central Missouri controlled the momentum in the first half with the only two shots of the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half ACU took three of the first five shots to shift the momentum of the match. The early season crowd came to life on a near miss by Jordan Reese, whose shot in the 64th minute sailed high and Jennie goalkeeper Lauren Bamvakais barely tipped the ball to keep the game scoreless.
Central Missouri had three shots late in the second half from Melanie Hall, but missed all three with the final shot sailing just wide left. The Wildcats defense held strong as it was able to clear the ball away from the goal to preserve the win.
ACU returns to action Sunday at 1 pm as it hosts St. Mary's.
