ABILENE -- The ACU Wildcats ran their Lone Star Conference winning streak to two matches Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Angelo State at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats are now 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the LSC volleyball race, while the Rambelles fall to 9-7 and 1-2. ACU will return to action Tuesday night at 6 p.m. when it travels to Odessa to take on Texas-Permian Basin.
ACU had little trouble taking care of business against the Rambelles, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18. The Rambelles put up a strong fight in the third set before succumbing to ACU, 25-23.
The first set was tight before a 10-5 ACU run pushed the Wildcats' lead from 10-9 to 20-14, giving them the separation they needed to take the victory. ACU hit .360 in the first set compared to .000 for Angelo State as the Wildcats were able to take the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats cruised to a big early lead in the second set, pushing out to an 18-8 advantage. ACU's lead, though, shrunk to 22-16 after some sloppy play by the Wildcats got the Rambelles back into the match. But back-to-back kills from
Jennie Hutt and
Jordan Schilling helped the Wildcats finish off the second set for a 2-0 lead.
The Rambelles gave the Wildcats fits in the third set, jumping out to a 7-4 lead and keeping the set close throughout. With the Rambelles leading 23-22, Alisa Meredith served long to make it 23-23.
A pair of attack errors -- one by Caroline Cleveland and another by Cara Turney -- gave the set and the match to the Wildcats.
Shawna Hines finished with 11 killls and a team-high seven total blocks, while Schilling had 11 kills and 10 digs.
