ABILENE -- Three ACU Wildcats were named to the d2football.com NCAA Division II all-America team, which was released earlier this week.
Senior offensive tackle Tony Washington, sophomore defensive end Aston Whiteside and senior defensive back Tony Harp were each named all-America. Washington was a first team selection, while Whiteside and Harp were named honorable mention all-America.
Washington was also voted first team all-America by both Daktronics and the American Football Coaches' Association. Whiteside was voted second team all-America on the Daktronics team.
Late last year, Washington was voted the LSC South Division Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second straight season. He was also voted first team NCAA Division II Super Region Four on the Daktronics team selected by the region's Sports Information Directors.
A finalist for the 2009 Gene Upshaw Award, Washington has already accepted an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Whiteside – a first team all-LSC South Division selection in 2009 – was among NCAA Division II leaders in both sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (14.5) in 2009. He was the LSC South Division Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year entering the 2009 season after an all-conference selection as a freshman in 2008.
Harp -- a two-time first team all-Lone Star Conference South Division selection and the 2006 LSC South Division Freshman of the Year – was second on the Wildcats in tackles in 2009 with 74, including 44 solo stops. Harp also finished with two interceptions, five pass breakups and seven passes defended.
