PLANO -- The seventh-ranked ACU Wildcats had little trouble Saturday afternoon handling Lone Star Conference rival Northeastern State, knocking off the RiverHawks, 7-2, in women's tennis action at Collin County Community College.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 14-3 on the season, while the RiverHawks fall to 6-1 on the year. ACU entered the match ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region, while NSU entered at No. 16 nationally and No. 3 in the region.
Northeastern State's veteran doubles team of Zuzanna Osinska and Emina Spirtovic got the RiverHawks off to a good start with a 9-7 win over ACU's team of
Jaclyn Walker and
Dina Pavlin at No. 1 doubles, but the Wildcats were able to win the other two matches to grab a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
The Wildcats then dominated singles play, winning five of six matches to take the victory. ACU won a pair of split-sets matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but won the other three matches in straight sets.
The win over Northeastern State came on the heels of ACU's 4-3 loss on Friday at SMU, which is ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division I.
"This was a good weekend for us," ACU head coach
Hutton Jones said. "We had a really good match against SMU, and then it's always good to go against Northeastern State. They're very tough and I'm sure we'll see them again in the conference tournament."
