DALLAS -- The seventh-ranked ACU Wildcats gave the SMU Mustangs all they wanted and more Friday evening before the Mustangs were able to pull out a 4-3 win over ACU in non-conference women's tennis action at the Turpin Tennis Center.
The Wildcats dropped to 13-3 on the season, but not before throwing a scare into the nation's 22nd-ranked NCAA Division I team. ACU will be back on the courts Saturday at 10 a.m. when it takes on Lone Star Conference rival Northeastern State at Collin County Community College in Plano.
"We're obviously not 100 percent satisfied because we lost, but I think this will get us ready to go back to work (Saturday)," ACU head coach
Hutton Jones said. "It was exciting and it's fun to be able to play in matches like this. I was proud of my team and I think this shows we're getting better."
The Mustangs won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play. But the Wildcats won three splits-sets singles matches to make it close, including a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win by
Julia Mongin over Aleksandra Malyarchikova at No. 2 singles.
Hannah Kelley and
Natalie Friend won at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, but SMU was able to win at 1, 3 and 4 to take the match.
