ACU wins first title since '95

Final Results

THACKERVILLE, Okla. – Tuesday afternoon the ACU Wildcats picked up their first Lone Star Conference Championship since 1995. Cyril Bouniol and Alex Carpenter also brought home an individual championship for the Wildcats finishing at -11 and LSC Co-Champions.

Bouniol finished the day with six birdies as Carpenter finished with seven including a birdie on No. 18 putting him in a tie with Bouniol at -11. Bouniol tapped in for bogey on No. 9 ending a streak of 23 consecutive holes without a bogey.

Alex Carpenter put himself in place for the championship recovering from a birdie on No. 10 to start the back nine before making birdies on No. 13, No. 14, and No. 15. Carpenter proceeded to birdie No. 18 tying him with Bouniol at -11 for the Championship.

“This is amazing. We were keeping track of scoring on the course and it was so close down the stretch. Midwestern played well throughout the Tournament and has played well all season long,” said Campbell. “I am so proud of these guys and glad to be Champs.”

Bouniol picked up his first collegiate win of his career after a course and LSC three-day tournament low round of 64. His low round also tied the ACU low round with Luke Alverson who recorded a 64 during the 1999-2000 season.

“Today was my first college win after lots of second and third place finishes it feels really good. I played really well yesterday and just tried to keep the same game plan taking it shot by shot,” said Bouniol. “I was paired with (MSU) Travis Klutts and he is a great player that can get low, so I knew I had to keep the same mind frame. Today I played really well and got similar results and that awesome.”

The Wildcats picked up their first team championship since 1995 and ninth in program history. The Championship is also the first under Mike Campbell who is in his seventh year as the ACU head coach.

“We played the front nine pretty good as a team, but knew we had work to do on the back side,” said Alex Carpenter. “I kept hearing we were all playing No. 12-16 really well and it turned out we picked up some ground.”

Carpenter's twin brother Adam finished with a solid round as well shooting a 71 (-1) for the second consecutive day. Adam was +1 for the Championship earning another top 20 finish as he tied for 15th; he was also the third Wildcat to shoot under par on Tuesday's final round.

As the No. 1 ranked team in the South Central Region the Wildcats will take a week off before traveling to the NCAA DII Super Regional in Duncan, Oklahoma. The Super Regional will pit the top 10 teams from the South Central and Midwest Regions at The Territory, May 3-5.
