No. 6 Wildcats sweep Rams

FORT WORTH -- The sixth-ranked ACU Wildcats ran their modest winning streak to four games Tuesday as they swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Texas Wesleyan at LaGrave Field.

The Wildcats won the first game, 12-3, behind a heavy-hitting offense before relying on three pitchers to one-hit the Rams in a 6-0 win in the nightcap.

The two wins push ACU to 34-8 overall, while the Rams fall to 19-15.  ACU will return to action this weekend when it hosts Cameron in a Lone Star Conference series at Crutcher Scott Field.  Friday's doubleheader will get started at 3:35 p.m., followed by a 2:05 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.

The Wildcats blew up for three runs in both the second and third inning of the first game before scoring six times in the fifth to put the game away.

Travis Latz hit his ninth home run of the season to get the scoring started in the third, while Ian Thomkins and Sky Valenzuela had RBI singles to make it 3-0.  Tomkins and Valenzuela each had RBI doubles in the third as ACU made it a 6-0 game.

In the fifth, Clint Bowker had an RBI double followed by a two-run single from Tomkins.  Aaron Oliver had an RBI double and Willie Uechi an RBI groundout to push ACU's lead to 12-2.

Kevin Justice got the start for the Wilcats and he went four innings to pick up the victory as he improved to 2-0.  Justice allowed five hits and two unearned runs before giving way to Ryan McCabe and Jordan Hartley, who finished up the final three innings.

In the second game, ACU closer Brad Rutherford got the start and the win as he improved to 2-2 on the year.  He allowed one hit and struck out five batters in five innings before Chay Lytle and Matt James finished up by each throwing a hitless inning.

ACU got a pair of runs in the third on a bases-loaded walk by Uechi and a sacrifice fly by Will Calhoun.  The Wildcats then put the game away with four runs in the fourth.

Valenzuela had an RBI single followed by an RBI walk by Chris Hall.  Oliver then grounded into an RBI fielder's choice and Uechi drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
