DUPONT, Wash. -- ACU golfers Alex Carpenter and Tyler Sheppard shot identical scores of 1-over-par 73 Monday on The Home Course, leaving them in a tie for 42nd place at the U.S. Amateur Championship tournament.
Carpenter shot a 1-over 37 through the front nine, bogeying Nos. 4 and 5 and birdieing No. 8. But he rebounded with an even par back nine to finish one stroke over for the round.
Carpenter, meanwhile, had a 1-under front nine before double bogeys on 13 and 14 left him 2-over for the back nine and 1-over for the day. Tied heading into Tuesday's second and final round of stroke play, Carpenter and Sheppard sit 11 strokes behind leader Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, Calif., but are just four strokes out of second place.
Wilson fired a 10-under 62 Monday to put himself seven strokes ahead of a nine-man pack that is tied for second at 3-under.
Carpenter and Sheppard complete the tournament Tuesday with a round at Chambers Bay Golf Course, a par-71 course in University Place, Wash.
After Tuesday's second round of strike play, the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers for six rounds of match play beginning on Aug. 25. The championship will conclude with a 36-hole final match on Sunday, Aug. 29.
