ABILENE – The ACU men's and women's tennis teams will get the fall season underway this weekend when they host the annual ACU Wal-Mart Open at both the Teague Special Events Center and the Eager Tennis Center.
Tournament play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday and conclude around 10 p.m., while play on Saturday is set to begin at 9 a.m. Individual players from ACU, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, the University of the Southwest, Collin County Junior College, Seminole State College, New Mexico Military Institute and North Central Texas College.
ACU head coach Hutton Jones said the season-opening tournament is a good chance to get a look at how his team will stack up in 2010-11.
"We really haven't even practiced so far," Jones said. "Our guys have been mostly hitting on their own, so this will give us a good chance to get out there and see where we are. We pretty much know what we have in our returning players, but I'm anxious to see our new people play on this level."
Jones is especially anxious to see how redshirt freshman Hans Hoch performs in his first action as a Wildcat. Hoch transferred to ACU last year, but had to sit out the entire season. He should play No. 1 in the spring for the Wildcats.
"I believe we'll see some special stuff from him, but this is just a start," Jones said. "After not playing for a year it might take him a little bit of time to knock the rust off. But I'm looking forward to seeing him get back out on the court in a competitive situation."
