SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Abilene Christian tennis teams won three of four major titles at this weekend's ITA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Southwest Baptist University. Julia Mongin and Hans Hach each won singles crowns for the second consecutive fall and the women's doubles title went to Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley.
For winning at the regional level, all four Wildcats will be entered into the ITA's Small College Championships, which will take place in Mobile, Ala., the weekend of Oct. 12-15.
ACU's collective showing was their second best under head coach Hutton Jones. The 16-year mentor said his team won all four regional titles during his second year at ACU in 1998 and again in 2010.
“We almost got all of them but just happened to run into a good SBU (Southwest Baptist) team in men's doubles,” Jones said, adding, “We have a special team this year, and based on what we've done this fall, I'm thinking we can be a real force in the spring.”
In winning his second ITA singles title, Hach recorded consecutive three-set victories over SBU's Jorge Margiotta and third-seeded Domingos Carissimo. Hach defeated Margiotta 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, and rallied from a set down to top Carissimo, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
According to Jones, Hach was only allotted an hour break in between matches and just another hour more before competing for the doubles championship with Nick Plum. Hach and Plum lost in the finals to Margiotta and Carissimo, 7-6, 6-2.
On the women's side, it was an all-ACU final where Mongin defeated Hermsdorf in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Jones noted that Mongin trailed 4-1 in the second set before finding a way to win.
“That was a great battle between Julia and Micah, it was a real war out there,” he said. “Julia's experience shined through and she played like a true leader.”
Mongin shutout teammate Brittney Reed, 6-0, 6-0, in advancing to the finals while Hermsdorf handled Monica Pieratt of Arkansas-Fort Smith, 6-3, 6-0.
Hermsdorf and Kelley entered the doubles bracket unseeded but together won five matches from the middle of the draw. They first upset fourth-seeded Gennissen and Innes of Dallas Baptist, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round, and then toppled sixth-seeded Pieratt and Whittemore of UA-FS, 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals.
The Wildcat duo upended third-seeded Perez and Fausett of Texas Southern, 6-4, 6-3, to win their first regional title.
