Wildcats Split Double-Header

AUSTIN – With pitching on display Sunday afternoon the Wildcat softball team split a double-header with St. Edward's falling in game one, 7-1, before scoring three runs in the seventh to win game two, 6-3, in non-conference action.
In game one the Hilltoppers took advantage of four Wildcat errors and banged out 10 hits as Diana Cezeaux shut down the Wildcat bats.  ACU was only able to manage one run on three hits as Cezeaux struck out six.
Ashley Calles scored Megan Brigance when she doubled to left in the fifth for the Wildcats' only run. Brigance had reached leading off the inning on a bunt single.
St. Edward's got on the scoreboard first scoring three runs in the third and broke the game open in the fourth with four more runs.
Shelby Hall took the loss as her record falls to 2-7. Hall was responsible for all seven runs however, only three runs were earned.
In game two both teams came out swinging with ACU pushing a single run across in the top of the first, but St. Edward's would take the lead scoring three in the bottom frame.
However, the Wildcats would tie the game in the top of the second when Brianna Fowlkes and Lyndi Smith blasted back-to-back homeruns to lead off.
From there both pitchers would settle in as senior Brittany Rexroat scattered six hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Rexroat only walked one and struck out two as only two runs were earned in the win.
Missy Mendoza would lead off the seventh with a single and score on a wild pitch to put ACU up, 4-3. However the Wildcats would add two more insurance runs when Brigance singled home Ashley Nolan who pinch ran for Tiana Tuinei.
Fowlkes would pick up her second RBI of the day as she followed Brigance with a single through the left side giving the Wildcats a three run lead.
The Wildcats move to 9-11 on the season as they return home for an afternoon double-header against Southeastern Oklahoma. First pitch from Wells Field is set for 3 p.m. in Abilene.
