WICHITA FALLS – The 10th-ranked ACU Wildcats handed Midwestern State its first NCAA Division II loss of the season Sunday afternoon with a 6-3 win over the Mustangs in Lone Star Conference play at the MSU Tennis Center.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 12-7 overall, while the Mustangs fall to 9-2 overall. The only other team to have beaten MSU before Sunday was NAIA powerhouse Azusa Pacific (Calif.) by a 6-3 score on March 16.
The Wildcats put the Mustangs in a huge hole by winning all three doubles matches, leaving them just two singles wins short of clinching the match. But those singles matches were taught, hard-fought matches as four were split-sets and one more went to a tie-breaker in the first set.
Hans Hach won a split-sets match over Mario Urban at No. 1 singles, taking the match 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, while
Alfredo Desiati beat Bo Zaputovic at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3. The Wildcats picked up their other win at No. 5 singles where
Bryan Joiner knocked off Jarrod Liston, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
