Hines wins NCAA scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced Thursday that former ACU volleyball standout Shawna Hines is one of 58 student-athletes who have been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.

Hines is the 29th ACU athlete since 1966 to win a post-graduate scholarship from the NCAA and the first since former softball standout Samantha Borgeson in 2007.

A two-time NCAA Division II all-America performer, Hines finished her career last fall after one of the greatest careers in ACU program history.  She is second all-time in blocks with 612 after leading the NCAA in blocks and blocks per game as a junior in 2009 and finishing second in each category as a senior in 2010.

Hines was the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year three straight years and was an all-LSC, all-region and all-America selection each of her last two seasons.

She finished a stellar four year career second on ACU's all-time list for blocks and with more than 1,000 kills in her career.  As well as being one of ACU's most heralded volleyball athletes she was named the top athlete at ACU as recipient of the Paul Goad Award as a junior, given each year to the top male and female athlete at the university.

Hines also carried a stellar effort in the classroom being named to the LSC all-Academic team three times majoring in business management.

Last season as a senior she helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, knocking off Truman State in the first round before falling to Washburn in the second round.  Hines finished her career a combined 97-35 in four seasons at ACU.

To qualify for the scholarship, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.

Created in 1964, NCAA postgraduate scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes.
