FLORENCE, Ala. – After three days of stroke play ACU will move onto Thursday's match medal play after finishing second at the 2011 NCAA National Championships on the Fighting Joe Course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trails.
ACU finished at 282 (-2) on Wednesday 14 strokes behind Lynn University who enters Thursday's match play as the No. 1 seed. Cal State-Monterey Bay finished +17 in a tie for third with Central Oklahoma who charged hard shooting -6 in their third round. Central Missouri (+21), Newberry College (+26), Fort Lewis (+30), and Barton College (+30) round out the top eight that advances into match play beginning Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m.
The Wildcats two seniors again paced the team as
Tyler Sheppard and
Cyril Bouniol recorded top 10 finishes as individual play ended on Wednesday. Both seniors carded two bogeys each in their round while both of Sheppard's came on the front nine. Sheppard had back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 and then again on No. 16 to get to, -3 for the day and -2 for the Championship and a seventh place finish.
Bouniol, who was last year's individual champion, hit 16 greens in his third round as he made the turn at -1. A bogey on No. 12 pushed him back to even, but a birdie on No. 13 and No. 17 put him under par again as he finished with a 70, and even par for the tournament.
“The round could have been a lot better, I hit it on the wrong side of the green for my two bogeys, but I regrouped and was able to make a charge,” said Bouniol.
The senior went for the green in two on No. 17 and was able to record his fourth birdie with a two putt to finish at even for the tournament and a ninth place individual finish.
“The important thing is we're playing tomorrow,” he said. “After winning the individual last year it was bitter sweet on the 18th, something I hope I get to share with the four other guys on Friday. I know going to sleep this could be my last round and hopefully it won't be, and we can all be celebrating on the 18th green as a team.”
Alex Carpenter also hit 16 greens in regulation as he finished even par for the day and +11 for the
tournament. Carpenter had two minor bumps on his score card after making the turn at -1, he had a bogey and double bogey on No. 11 and No. 12. However, the sophomore recovered and showed resilience knocking down two tough birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 to shoot 72 on Wednesday.
Trey Sullivan who had been solid all week for ACU, helped keep the team near the top three spots with a 75 (+3) for his final round. Sullivan was one over par at the turn, but a double bogey on No. 10 jumped him to +3. He finished with a birdie on No. 17, to finish +5 for the championships and tied for 21st place.
ACU will play Fort Lewis who was tied for 7th after Wednesday in the first quarterfinal round of match play starting at 7:45 a.m. off No. 1 tee.. Each player will be paired with their counter-part as each player's 18 hole score will earn their team a point. The four teams winning their morning round will advance to a semifinal round with teams teeing off at 1:45 p.m. from No. 1 tee.
