ABILENE – Borja Cortés, Hans Hach, Julia Mongin and Brittney Reed are representing Abilene Christian tennis at this weekend's USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, which will take place at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
The championships are comprised of eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
Matches begin Thursday and wrap Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the finals of men and women's singles. The winners of each division level will again compete Sunday to become “Super Bowl” champions and earn a wild card entry into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
Cortés, Hach, Mongin and Reed combined to win all four South Central regional championships two weeks ago at ACU's Eager Tennis Pavilion and will enter the championship brackets among the top-four seeds. Hach is seeded second in both singles and doubles with his partner Cortés, while Mongin is second in singles and fourth in doubles with Reed.
Cortés and Reed are making their fall postseason debuts; however, all-Americans Hach and Mongin have qualified for this championship each of the last three years. Mongin has won three bronze medals thus far, two coming as a singles player in 2011 and 2010, and one in doubles with Jaclyn Walker in 2010.
Hach placed fifth in singles during his first trip to Mobile in 2010, before coming in third last fall. He also won the doubles third-place match with Bryan Joiner in 2010.
Hach begins this year's championship Thursday with a first-round singles match against Joechem Hoefnagles of Azusa Pacific, and then will team with Cortés in the early afternoon to battle the unseeded Central Region champions Sergio De Vilchez and Luis Altimires of Northwest Missouri State.
Mongin starts her first-round singles match at 10:30 a.m. vs. Natalia Kozel of Drury, and then in doubles, will face Fanni Varga and Mehak Singh of Southwest Baptist. Varga finished last spring ranked 27th in singles, and Singh was 47th.
ACU has won National Small College Championships doubles titles with the last coming in 1994 on the men's side by the team of John Cole and Robby Scott. The Wildcats also won both men's (Lance Cowart/Brent Klapprott) and women's (Michelle King/Lara Mahaney) doubles crowns in 1991.
