ABILENE - Abilene Christian's No. 6 men's tennis team made good use of its talent and depth on its home tennis courts Saturday to defeat regional rivals Hardin-Simmons, 8-1, and Texas-Permian Basin, 9-0.
The victories lifted the Wildcats' season record to 7-4 as they prepare for next week's home battles vs. Incarnate Word and McMurry, and a big road match at Texas A&M scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m.
Playing outside today in the midst of 20 to 30 mile per hour wind gusts, ACU began its day with a tough showdown with its neighbors from Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowboys won only one match at No. 4 singles as Michael McCullough came back from a set down to beat
Michael Morris, 4-6, 7-5, 15-13. But Steven Stanley at No. 6 also pushed ACU's
Cody McCarty to a third set, while Erich Bein at No. 1, and Gavin Ybarra at No. 5 went toe-to-toe with
Hans Hach and
Kyle Plum, respectively, in a pair of 7-5 lossses.
Nick Plum and Borja Cortes, competing at No. 2 and 3 singles, were the lone Wildcats to post set shutouts. Plum beat Sean Strehlow, 6-0, 6-2, in improving to 8-2 on the year, while Cortes dispatched Cullen Dees, 6-0, 6-1.
The Wildcats played without Hach and
Nick Plum in singles against the Permian Basin Falcons but still won every match utilizing a modified lineup. No. 43
Alfredo Desiati, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this spring, beat Meliton Morales 6-1, 6-0, for one of six straight-set victories.
Playing alongside Desiati were
Guilherme Gesser, Cortes,
Kyle Plum, McCarty, and Morris - none of who surrendered more than three points to their opposition.
Hach again won at No. 2 doubles with Desiati to remain unbeaten at 9-0. Six of those wins have come at the No. 1 position.
