Wildcats drop both ends of doubleheader at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's held the potent ACU offense to just one run on 10 hits on Wednesday as the Rattlers swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from the Wildcats at the St. Mary's Softball Field.

The Rattlers won the first game, 4-1, and then blanked the Wildcat, 1-0, in the second game.  The two losses dropped ACU to 18-8 on the season as the Wildcats have lost four of their last five games.  ACU returns to action this weekend when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville in a three-game Lone Star Conference series at Wells Field.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats were shut out for the first time this season as they were held to just four hits.  The game was a scoreless tie through the top of the seventh before the Rattlers plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

With Shelby Hall in the circle for the Wildcats, the Rattlers loaded the bases with one out before Jared Gonzalez singled to centerfield to drive in pinch-runner Alex Garcia with the game-winning run.

Hall (4-2) was the hard-luck loser as she pitched 6 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and two walks in the loss.

In the first game, the Rattlers scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull away from the Wildcats, who managed just six hits against Emily Brittain.

ACU starting pitcher Peyton Mosley dropped to 6-5 with the loss as she pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) and one walk while striking out three Rattlers.

ACU's only run came in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Brittany Fowlkes.
