ABILENE -
Caitlyn Crain and
Peyton Mosley provided two strong performances from the pitching circle to help Abilene Christian University guarantee a series victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville by sweeping Friday night's doubleheader at Poly Wells Field. Mosley led ACU to a 4-2 win in the first game while Crain shutout the Javelinas in game two as the Wildcats won 1-0.
ACU improved to 20-8 overall and moved to 6-4 in Lone Star Conference play while TAMK dropped to 12-19 overall and 1-10 in league play. Below is a recap of each game:
Game Two: ACU 1 Texas A&M-Kingsville 0
Caitlyn Crain threw a four-hit shutout and struck out eight to move to 9-1 on the season helping the ACU Wildcats take a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in game two. Crain struck out five consecutive hitters between the fourth and fifth innings, and the Javelinas could never get anything going offensively.
Denise Arnold and Lauren Denney combined to make it tough on the Wildcats as well from the pitching circle for TAMK. However, ACU's lone run in the third inning on a
Courtney Flanary RBI single would be all the Wildcats would need.
Arnold was charged with the loss for TAMK throwing 4.1 innings; she scattered five hits, walked three and stuck out two while Denny retired the last five Wildcat hitters.
Keanna Winkfield scored ACU's only run and led the team with two hits in the contest. TAMK had a 1-out double in the top of the seventh from Kaycee Bryan, however, Crain caused two consecutive groundouts from Javelina hitters to close the game.
Game One: ACU 4 Texas A&M-Kingsville 2
Abilene Christian's
Peyton Mosley threw a complete-game 3-hitter surrendering just one earned run and the Wildcats took a 4-2 victory over the Javelinas in game one of the doubleheader. Mosley walked just two and struck out three to improve to 7-5 on the season.
ACU struck first scoring in the first inning when
Courtney Flanary scored on a passed ball. The Wildcats added a run in the third when Flanary scored again on a
Kimberly Briggs double.
Kingsville fought back with a solo home run in the top of the fifth when Kodie Garner knocked a ball off the scoreboard in leftfield to cut the lead to one. However, ACU countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Briggs and
Sarah Martinez.
The Javelinas threatened in the top of the seventh loading the bases with one out thanks to a pair of Wildcat errors in the field. However, TAMK could only muster up one unearned run in a rally attempt and Mosley closed the door with a foul out to end the contest.
Flanary finished with three runs scored and a pair of hits while Briggs had two RBI's. In the losing effort, Garner and Bailey Offill had the only two runs driven in for Kingsville. Lauren Denney picked up the loss on the mound giving up four runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
