Wildcats Fall To No. 35 Baylor, Beat Temple College In Waco

WACO, Texas  - Abilene Christian's sixth-ranked men's tennis team won and lost a match on the courts of the Hurd Tennis Center Saturday. The Wildcats began their day with a 9-0 win over Temple College, but then lost  6-1 to host and 35th-ranked Baylor Bears.

ACU head coach Hutton Jones said he's always looking for the "little victories" against  bigger schools, and tonight he received two as the 22nd-ranked team of Hans Hach and Nick Plum defeated Baylor's Roberto Maytin and Kike Grangeiro, 8-5, at the No. 1 line, and then 43rd-ranked Alfredo Desiati came from a set behind to beat Lars Behlen, 1-6, 7-5, 11-9, at the No. 5 position.

Desiati was the only Wildcat to win both matches today, lifting his spring record to 13-7. Earlier in the day he beat Temple's Justin Delgado at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.

For Hach and Plum, their victory kept them undefeated at No. 1 doubles at 7-0. Hach's record as a doubles player is an impressive 18-1 split between five partners, while Plum is 15-3.

Hach today also won with Guilherme Gesser at No. 1 doubles vs. the Temple duo of  Thomas Greer-Smith and Robin Hochguertel, 8-1, and Plum was victorious with Desiati at No. 2, beating Dimitar Komov and Delgado, 8-2.

With Hach held out of singles play vs. Temple, Plum took over at No. 1 and won his season debut at that position over Greer-Smith 4-6, 7-6, 10-6. The remaining five Wildcats - Cortes, Gesser, Desiati, Kyle Plum, and Michael Morris - all won in straight sets.

Hach (16-3) returned to the top spot vs. Baylor where he lost to 33rd-ranked player Mate Zsiga, 6-4, 6-1. The defeat was Hach's first since a Feb. 11 decision at No. 36 Rice, snapping an 11-match winning streak. Three of those wins were against DI opposition.

The Wildcats return to action at home Thursday, March 29 for a 5 p.m. dual vs. South Central Region foe St. Mary's.
