Texas Relays Complete Results

AUSTIN
– Abilene Christian University senior Nick Jones moved to the top of NCAA Division II in the discus throw here Saturday with a solid performance at the 85th annual Texas Relays.

Already the Division II leader in the shot put, Jones threw 195 feet, 2 inches to finish fourth in the university-college section A discus throw at Myers Stadium.  His best throw came in the fourth round of a fine series for the senior from Amarillo.  He was actually the third collegiate athlete behind Luke Bryant of Oklahoma (197-9) and Ryan Crouser of Texas (195-6).

Jason Morgan, a Jamaican competing unattached after representing Louisiana Tech, was second in the final standings at 197-4.

Also here Saturday, the Wildcat men's team turned in the second fastest time in NCAA Division II this early season in the 4x400 relay in 3:10.42 with a nice 48.4 lead lap by Dennis Bain and 48.3 anchor by Osei Allyene-Forte.  Their time was good for third here in the college division behind JC champion South Plains (3:05.17) and NAIA power Wayland Baptist (3:09.60).

Jones opened his 2012 outdoor discus competition here with 183-1 and followed with 193-2 and 191-9 in the preliminary rounds.  He was third going into the finals, where he produced 195-2 and 191-2 before a foul in the sixth round.

Bryant was in fourth place after the preliminary throws, but he moved to first in the fourth round.

Jones is a three-time NCAA Division II champion in the discus and recently won his first shot put title at the NCAA Division II indoor meet.

An hour after the discus concluded here Saturday, Jones moved from the north to the south end of Myers Stadium on a warm afternoon in sunny Central Texas to compete in the shot put.  After fouls in the first and second round, he came through with 58-8 in the third round to move into fifth place and advance to the final.

But then came three more foul throws for Jones, leaving him in eighth place in the final standings for the shot put.  Texas senior Jacob Thormehlen was the winner in 64-1.

Other Wildcats competing here Saturday on the final day of the 2012 Texas Relays were sprinter Paris Robertson and hurdlers Bain and Kevin Johnson.  Robertson, in addition to running Saturday on the sprint relay, was eighth in the college men's 100 meters in 10.57, and Bain (14.18) and Johnson (14.50) were third and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles.

The 4x100 relay ran 40.94 for third in the college division behind South Plains (40.24) and ACU's Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville (40.26).  Bain, Robertson, Geary and Allyene-Forte comprised the sprint relay for Wildcat coach Roosevelt Lofton.

Running the middle two laps of the 4x400 were Jordan Geary and Bango Jayesimi.  The brother of Wildcat freshman Allyene-Forte, senior Ade, was competing here this weekend for LSU.
