No. 6 ACU Women's Tennis Blanks No. 10 Rollins 9-0

ABILENE - Abilene Christian's sixth ranked women's tennis team continued its superior play this weekend with a convincing 9-0 victory over No. 10 Rollins College Sunday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.

With today's victory, the Wildcats (11-2, 3-0 Lone Star Conference) finished their homestand at 3-0 in which they beat Incarnate Word, No. 20 Tarleton State, and the Tars by a combined score of 26-1.

Rollins dropped to 4-4 with the loss.

ACU's 16th-year head coach Hutton Jones said he's never been more satisfied with a victory and wished he had a film of his team's performance.

"All I could keep saying afterward was 'wow' forward and backward," he said. "That is a solid Rollins team, but our combination of professionalism and workmanlike effort on every point is what gave us today's result. It's always hard to win a point, but now we're feeling comfortable in tough situations, and what I saw on nine occasions today was the mental allowing the physical to happen."

The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a doubles sweep and then refused to let Rollins into any singles match. ACU won two doubles points by matching 8-3 scores, while its top-line team of No. 21 Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley held off the Rollins duo of Lisa Loft and Kayli Ragsdale, 9-8 (7-4)

Third-ranked All-America Julia Mongin helped set the tone in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 over 22nd ranked Loft, and right next to her, No. 12 Hermsdorf quickly dispatched Stefania Tkach at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 39 Brittney Reed, Laura Mongin and Kelley also won in straight sets, while Emily Conrad's opponent at No. 5 - Elissa DeCampli - retired following a 7-6 loss.

"I'm not sure where this win is going to take us as a team, but this is exactly what it takes to win a NCAA Championship," Jones said. "Tennis is a game comprised of lots of little points and today we were relentless in competing for each one. This was a big match for both teams, and we definitely showed up."

ACU returns to action Saturday, March 10 with a 10 a.m. home dual vs. St. Edward's.
