Friday's NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Results
MANKATO, Minn. - Abilene Christian's men's and women's track and field teams could not crack the scoreboard during the first day of competition at the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Minnesota State - Mankato.
Multi-athlete Parker Petty still has a chance to score in the heptathlon Saturday but will have to make up at least three spots over the final three events - 60 hurdles, pole vault, and 1000-meter run.
Petty currently is in 11th place after four events as a result of a tough start in the 60-meter dash and long jump. The junior finished ninth out of 13 competitors in the 60m with a time of 7.40 seconds, and then placed 12th in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet -1.75 inches (6.14 meters).
Petty rebounded later in the day with consecutive sixth-place showings in the shot put (39-01.25, 11.92m) and high jump (6-03.25, 1.91m). With 2687 points, Petty enters tomorrow's competitions 77 points out of eighth place (Shawn Boss, Central Missouri) and 347 points behind leader Darius Walker of Central Missouri.
Elsewhere on the track both Dennis Bain and Karla Hope failed to qualify for the finals of the 60m hurdles and 400m dash, respectively. Bain placed 11th of 14 in the hurdles with a time of 8.01, while Hope placed 13th in 57.10.
Levance Williams missed scoring in the long jump by 2.75 inches as he ended up with a ninth-place leap of 23-09.50 (7.25m).
Grand Canyon sophomore Karlin Stewart won the long jump national championship with an effort of 24-08.50 (7.53m).
ACU should come away with a handful of points Saturday as former All-Americans
Nick Jones and Amanda Ouedraogo will both be in competition.
Ouedraogo is a two-time NCAA runner-up in the triple jump and enters this postseason as the No. 1 triple jumper in all of DII after recording a jump of 42-4.75 (12.92m) to win the championship heat of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
Jones - a three time NCAA champion in the discus - is in search of his first national shot put title (indoor or outdoor). He recently recorded a personal best of 62-5 (19.02m) in the shot put two weeks ago at the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Also competing Saturday evening is the Wildcats' women's 4x400m relay of Karolyn Palmer, Shennae Steele, Ayesha Rumble and Hope.
