TROPHY CLUB – The ACU Wildcats put themselves into position on Monday to win the Lone Star Conference men's golf championship, but they couldn't finish it off on Tuesday as they finished second behind Cameron.
ACU entered Tuesday's final round trailing the Aggies by five strokes, but could only make up one stroke as Cameron claimed championship by four strokes over the Wildcats. The Aggies finished at 1-under-par 863 over the three rounds, while the Wildcats finished at 3-over-par 867.
The Aggies shot a final-round 292, while the Wildcats posted a 291. Midwestern State was third at 9-over-par 873, West Texas A&M was fourth at 20-over-par 884, Texas A&M-Commerce was fifth at 30-over-par 894, and Incarnate Word was sixth at 50-over-par 914.
The Wildcats did see junior
Alex Carpenter claim the LSC individual championship as he finished Tuesday with a round of 2-under-par 70 to finish at 3-under-par 213 for the tournament.
Carpenter – the 2010 LSC co-champion and the three-time league Player of the Year – birdied the par-5 16th hole to get to 2-under-par on the day and 3-under-par for the tournament and then parred the final two holes to edge West Texas A&M's Ben Hargis (214 total) by one stroke.
Carpenter's younger brother,
Luke Carpenter – an honorable mention all-LSC selection as a freshman – finished tied for ninth at 3-over-par 219 after firing a round of 1-over-par 219 on Tuesday. His teammate, sophomore
Trey Sullivan, shot his third straight 73 to finish at 3-over-par 219.
Kyle Dickerson finished 16th at 7-over-par 223 after a 75 on Tuesday, while
Corbin Renner – the LSC Freshman of the Year – finished tied for 21st after posting a 79 on Tuesday and finishing at 10-over-par 226.
The Wildcats – ranked No. 8 in the country – will now move on to play in the NCAA Division II South Central / Midwest Super Regional, which will be played May 7-9 at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo.
ACU – which finished third at last year's NCAA Division II national tournament – will be bidding for a return trip to the national tournament, which this year will be played May 15-19 at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.
