Wildcats Earn At-Large Bid To NCAA Championships

ABILENE - The Abilene Christian softball team received news that it's heading back to the NCAA DIvision II Championship for the fifth time in eight years after the brackets were unveiled Monday morning on NCAA.com.

The Wildcats (29-16, 15-11 Lone Star Conference) will be part of a four-team South Central Regional hosted by Central Oklahoma, and will face third-seeded Emporia State (39-9) in a first-round game scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m. The No. 2 Bronchos will then take on No. 7 and Lone Star Conference Tournament champion Incarnate Word at 7 p.m.

The tournament follows a double-elimination format and will be held at Edmond North High School.

First-round winners and losers meet Saturday, followed by another elimination game.  The finals are at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the “if necessary” game to follow.

The winner of the UCO regional moves on to face the winner of the South Central I Regional in a best-of-three series the weekend of May 11-12 at a site to be determined.

Angelo State (44-9) is the region's overall No. 1 seed and hosts the other half of the regional, which also includes No. 4 Missouri Western (42-11), No. 5 Texas Woman's (36-15) and No. 8 St. Edward's (29-19).

The South Central Region champion joins seven other regional winners in the Division II World Series in Louisville, Ky. May 16-19
