First-round scores
ABILENE – The 13th-ranked ACU Wildcats fired one of the best rounds in school history Monday in the opening round of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament and will carry a 15-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round.
The Wildcats shot a 14-under-par 270 on Monday to take the commanding lead into the second round. ACU leads second-place St. Mary's by 15 strokes after the Rattlers shot a 1-over-par 285 on Monday. McMurry is in third at 2-over-par 286, followed by Queens University (N.C.) in fourth at 3-over-par 287 and West Texas Texas A&M and Midwestern State tied for fifth at 4-over-par 288.
ACU hasn't won its own tournament since 2006, but is in a solid position to win not only the team title, but the individual title as well. Senior
Alex Carpenter – bidding for his 19th career win – is in first place after firing a first-round score of 7-under-par 64. Carpenter birdied each of the last four holes at the par-71, 6,977-yard layout at the Diamondback Golf Club.
Morgan Johnson of ACU is in second at 4-under-par 67 and Wildcat sophomore
Corbin Renner is tied for third at 3-under-par 68. A pair of McMurry golfers – Matt Porter and Matt Ragovin – are tied with Johnson for third at 68.
ACU still holds the NCAA record for lowest score in a round (26-under-par 262) at the 1991 Lone Star Conference Tournament where current head coach Mike Campbell won the individual medalist title.
Two seasons ago at The Oklahoma Collegiate the Wildcats fired a first-round score of 267 under Campbell's direction, and he also presided over another pair of 270 scores (Dallas Baptist Patriot Invitational in 2011 and the second round of the Oklahoma Collegiate).
