ABILENE –
Alex Carpenter and the 13th-ranked ACU Wildcats stormed to both the individual and team championships Tuesday at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate at Diamondback Golf Club.
The Wildcats followed up their blistering opening round of 270 on Monday with another solid round of 5-under-par 279 on Tuesday to give them a two-round total of 549 and a 30-shot victory over St. Mary's, which shot 285-294–579. The Wildcats were never threatened, despite the blustery conditions and heat in south Abilene on Tuesday.
Our Lady of the Lake finished third at 581 (291-290) with Dallas Baptist in fourth at 583 (291-292) and Lubbock Christian in fifth at 586 (293-293).
"I though my guys played great," ACU head coach Mike Campbell said. "I'm really proud of all our guys and the way they competed. We came out (Monday) when the weather conditions were ideal and our guys shot 14-under-par; the second or third lowest score since I've been coaching this team. Then (Tuesday) the conditions were a bit more difficult, more windy, and they still played great. I think we have a big year ahead of us."
ACU's win is its first in own tournament since 2006 and only the second since winning it in 2002. The Wildcats were led by their senior all-America in Carpenter, who shot rounds of 64 on Monday and 69 on Tuesday to finish at 9-under-par 133 to win the individual title for the second straight year. Carpenter's title is his 16th in 39 career collegiate starts, meaning he has won 45 percent of the tournaments he's played in as a Wildcat.
Sophomore
Corbin Renner finished second overall for the Wildcats, firing rounds of 68-69 to finish at 5-under-par 137, four strokes behind Carpenter.
Morgan Johnson – who did not play on ACU's top team at all in 2011-12 – finished a strong third overall with rounds of 67 and 71 to finish at 4-under-par 138.
ACU junior
Trey Sullivan also finished under par for the tournament as he shot rounds of 71 and 70 to finish at 1-under-par 141 and tied for sixth overall. Senior
Adam Carpenter finished tied for 37th at 149 (76-73).
The Wildcats will be back in action Sept. 24-25 at The Territory Classic in Duncan, Okla.
