WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Wednesday night's soccer showdown between Abilene Christian and Midwestern State ended in a 1-1 tie, making it the first draw between the last two Lone Star Conference champions through an 11-game series that dates back to 2007.
The deadlock snapped ACU's (3-5-1, 1-3-1 LSC) losing streak at two, however, the Mustangs remain a point ahead in the league standings at 1-6-2 and 1-2-2.
Tonight, the two sides combined for 38 shots (10 on goal), but only Megan Turner's redirection in the 62nd minute and Maddie Fraser's answer in the 66th made it past the opposing goalkeeper. Both players' goals were their first of the season.
ACU fired seven shots between MSU's game-tying goal and the end of regulation, but winger Ashley Craig had her first shot saved in the 70th minute and her second bounce off the post in the 86th. Then after Stephanie Heron struck one wide, both Turner and Andrea Carpenter had their shots blocked.
MSU, meanwhile, missed on their next two attempts and couldn't get off any shots over the final five minutes.
The Mustangs outshot the Wildcats, 6-2, through the two overtimes, but ACU goalkeeper Arielle Moncure came up with a pair of saves early on and then watched several other shots sail high.
Moncure finished with seven saves. Mallory Whitworth's save on Craig's shot was her only stop of the night.
The Wildcats continue their five-match road trip this weekend with stops Friday and Sunday at Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce.
