ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats' first Southland Conference contest in any sport in 2013 will be on Thursday, Sept. 19, when the volleyball team travels to Arkansas to take on Central Arkansas.
That will be ACU's first Southland Conference contest since the university announced last August that it would be moving up to NCAA Division I affiliation and returning to the Southland Conference, a league it helped form 50 years ago. ACU's 40-year run in the Lone Star Conference will end later this year and the university will re-join the Southland Conference July 1, 2013, which means the Wildcats will begin playing NCAA Division I athletics in the 2013-14 school year. Because of previous schedule commitments, the football team will begin Southland play in 2014, but all other sports will begin Division I competition with the 2013-14 school year.
ACU's first Southland Conference football game since 1972 will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, when the Wildcats travel to Houston to take on the Huskies. The Wildcats' first home football game in the Southland Conference will be Saturday, Oct. 4, when the Wildcats host the Cardinals of Lamar University.
Later this fall, ACU's first home Southland Conference event since the end of the 1972-73 athletics year will be Friday, Sept. 20, when the Wildcats host Sam Houston State in a women's soccer match at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch. That will be the first of six Southland home matches this fall for the Wildcats.
The volleyball's teams first home Southland match will be Thursday, Sept. 26, against McNeese State (La.), followed by a home match on Saturday, Sept. 28, against Nicholle State (La.).
The men's and women's 2013-14 Southland Conference basketball schedules will get started on Thursday, Jan. 9, when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Privateers in a doubleheader. The Southland Conference will play doubleheaders and will play Thursday-Saturday schedule. Two days after playing at New Orleans, the Wildcats will be in Hammond, La., to take on Southeastern Louisiana.
The first Southland Conference home game for each team will be Thursday, Jan. 16, when they Oral Roberts at Moody Coliseum.
The baseball team will play a limited schedule in its first year in the league, playing only 24 conference games and opening with a three-game home set against Incarnate Word (Friday, March 28-Sunday, March 30). Each series will consist of three single nine-inning games.
The softball team will open its Southland Conference schedule on Saturday, March 22, when it takes on Incarnate Word in a three-game series in San Antonio. The softball series will be a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday. ACU's first home series will be the next weekend (Saturday, March 29-Sunday, March 30) when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Wells Field.
The women's tennis team will play its first Southland match on Friday, March 7, at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and will play its first home conference match on Friday, March 21, against Stephen F. Austin.
The Wildcats own 17 Southland Conference titles in their history: seven in men's cross country, seven in men's track and field, and three in men's basketball.
