ABILENE – The Abilene Christian tennis program Thursday was bestowed with 22 postseason awards from the Lone Star Conference head coaches and sports information directors. Topping the list of Wildcat honorees were seniors Hans Hach and Julia Mongin, each of who was tabbed Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.
Hach and Mongin also made their respective all-conference singles and doubles teams along with teammates Borja Cortés, Guilherme Gesser, Micah Hermsdorf, Hannah Kelley, Laura Mongin, Jason Proctor and Brittney Reed.
Wildcats Kaysie Hermsdorf and Nicklas Wingord each received the LSC's Freshman of the Year award, while Laura Mongin was one of three players named Sportsmanship Player of the Year. Wingord also made the honorable mention squad as a singles player along with Cortés.
Hutton Jones earned his fourth Head Coach of the Year honor on the women's side after leading his team to an overall record of 24-5 and 5-0 mark vs. the LSC. Incredibly, ACU's women's team has not lost a regular season conference match since 1984 and is 35-0 all-time vs. the league under Jones.
Academic awards also were announced today by the conference, and Micah Hermsdorf claimed Academic Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. Joining Hermsdorf as repeat honorees were Hach and Emily Conrad.
The Lone Star Conference Tennis Championship will be held April 19-20 at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake, Texas. Four men's teams - Abilene Christian, Cameron, Incarnate Word, Midwestern State - and six women's Teams - ACU, CU, UIW, MSU, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Kingsville - will be competing for the LSC Tournament title.
Play starts Friday with women's first-round matches at 1:30 p.m., while the men's semifinals are at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The women's semifinals will be played at 6:30 p.m. The championship matches are set for Saturday at 12 p.m.
The ACU men will face Incarnate Word Friday at 4:30 p.m., while the women will take the court at 6:30 p.m. vs. the winner of UIW and Cameron.
The tournament format is nine-point matches with three, eight-game Pro Sets being used for doubles and six best of three-sets being used for singles. Six courts will be assigned to each match. All singles matches will start 10 minutes after the doubles are completed. The match will stop when one team reaches five points.
ACU has won every conference championship on the women's side since the tournament's inception with the exceptions of 1983, 1984, 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2007.
The ACU men have won the last four LSC championships and 13 since 1983.
