ABILENE – The NCAA Tuesday night awarded Abilene Christian's fifth-ranked women's tennis team with the South Central Region's No. 1 seed and hosting privileges for the first two rounds of the 2013 NCAA Championship.
Fourth-seeded Tarleton State and fifth-seeded Western New Mexico will be joining the Wildcats on the outdoor courts at the Eager Tennis Pavilion early next week. The TexAnns (12-11) will face the Mustangs (12-14) Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. for the right to face ACU (26-5) Monday at 11:45 a.m.
In the second half of the South Central Region bracket, No. 2 seed Midwestern State will play host to No. 3 seed St. Mary's. The winners of Monday's duals will advance to the NCAA Championship Round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz., the weekend of May 8-11.
The Wildcats are 26-5 overall and recently won their 25th and final Lone Star Conference Championship last Saturday over Midwestern State, 5-0, at the Southlake Tennis Center. They also return several players from last year's NCAA Semifinal team, including sisters Julia and Laura Mongin, Emily Conrad, Hannah Kelley, Micah Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed.
This year's team appears to be just as good or even better than last year's edition as the Wildcats' nine starters have all won 10 or more matches and have a combined singles record of 128-45 (.740). ACU also went 5-0 vs. the conference, 9-0 against the region and were 3-3 vs. nationally ranked opponents, which includes a 5-4 win over No. 9 West Florida and 6-3 decision vs. No. 28 Fresno Pacific.
In doubles, ACU's teams are a combined 75-11 (.872) led by the nationally ranked duos of Julia Mongin and Reed (11-2) and Micah Hermsdorf and Kelley (16-3). All-Americas a year ago, Hermsdorf and Kelley have won their last 11 matches together during ACU's 13-match winning streak, while Mongin and Reed won last fall's ITA/USTA South Central Regional Championship.
