ABILENE – Abilene Christian tennis players Hans Hach and Micah Hermsdorf Wednesday were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division II At-Large Team. They are the second and third Wildcats this season to earn Academic All-America honors, joining soccer midfielder Julie Coppedge.
Academic All-America Committee members and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Board of Directors vote upon the national award, which is sponsored by Capital One.
A junior from Spring, Texas, Hermsdorf is a two-time Academic All-America selection and the program's first multiple winner since Julie Mavity garnered three consecutive citations from 1997 to 1999. Hermsdorf made this year's second team after making CoSIDA's third team in 2012.
Hermsdorf claimed her second Academic Player of the Year trophy from the Lone Star Conference earlier this spring, and on the court, she and doubles partner Hannah Kelley won 19 matches together in helping ACU advance to the NCAA semifinals. All-Americas in 2012, Hermsdorf and Kelley finished this spring ranked 15th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Hermsdorf is majoring advertising/public relations major and has a grade-point average of 3.96.
Hach is a first-time Academic All-America and recently graduated from ACU with a degree in management. He made this year's third team and was one of only three Lone Star Conference student-athletes tabbed to an at-large team (Hermsdorf and Incarnate Word swimmer Mark Rubin).
A five-time all-America, Hach finished his final season at ACU ranked sixth in singles and 17th in doubles with Guilherme Gesser. Hach compiled an 18-7 singles mark (18-8 in doubles) this spring and last month was named the ITA's South Central Region Senior Player of the Year.
Hach also garnered his third Lone Star Conference Player of the Year in April, and last fall he won his third consecutive USTA/ITA regional singles title.
Eligible sports for the at-large program include bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's matches.
