NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Lonnie Smith crushed an 18-year Abilene Christian school record in the weight throw Saturday to highlight the Wildcats' two-day stay at Oklahoma's J.D. Martin Invitational. Smith's victory was one of three for ACU, which sent nine individuals to the medal stand against competition from OU, UT Arlington, SMU, Incarnate Word and North Texas.
Smith won the weight throw competition with a personal best distance of 62 feet, 2.25 inches (18.95m), which was 7-4 (2.23m) further than her previous best recorded last year at the Southland Conference Championships. This effort also topped the previous ACU record held by Selena Bettis since 1999 by 5 feet-1 inch (1.56m) and beat the rest of the 17-woman field by 21-0.25 inches as runner-up Sara Lenman of Arlington topped out at 60-05.00 (18.41m).
Smith set the record on her third of six attempts. Her first two throws landed at 53-6 (16.31m) and 54-10 (16.42m). She then fouled on two of her last three tries with a distance of 59-10 (18.25) – the second furthest throw in school history – reached in between.
Bettis' old record of 57-1 (17.39m) was recorded on Feb. 16, 1999 in Oklahoma City.
ACU's men's team recorded the other two victories. Sophomore Kai Schmidt won the shot put with a PR of 54-00.50 (16.47m), while freshman Avery Williams set an indoor best of 49.67 seconds to win the 400m dash.
Schmidt beat six other throwers, including runner-up teammate Morgan Knight (53-03.50 / 16.24m) and Oklahoma freshman Bradley Daboub (53-01.75 / 16.20m). And in the 400m dash, Williams beat Arlington's D'Undre Mitchell by .75 seconds in a field of nine runners.
During a weekend in which there were more than two dozen personal records set, the Wildcats additionally earned six silver-medal showings and three third-place finishes. Runner-up honors went to the aforementioned Knight, plus Rosen Daniel in the 600-yard run (1:13.50), Sterlen Paul in the 800m (1:58.14) and Michaela Hackett in the mile (4:57.89).
Daniel, along with Williams, Ryan Linton and Samuel Garcia were second in the 4x400 Yard Relay with a mark of 3:21.17, and in the heptathlon, Wyatt French totaled a second-place count of 5,024 points. French finished 47 points behind winner and junior Sooner Steven Jazdyk (5,071 points).
Taylor Yantis Woods was third in the pentathlon with 3,057 points coming in behind Oklahoma's Makayla Stephens (3,645) and Arlington's Alexus Henry (3,546).
Additional bronze medals were garnered by Knight in the weight throw (53-02.25 / 16.21m) and Garcia in the 600 Yard Run (1:14.45), who finished behind teammate Daniel and champion Deion Hardy of Incarnate Word (1:13.13).
The Wildcats return to action Thursday, Feb. 9 for the inaugural Dunamis Sports Group Indoor Classic. This meet will take place at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
