Four Wildcats victorious at Kittley Invite Saturday

ABILENE – ACU track and field celebrated four victories Saturday during the second and final day of the Wes Kittley Invitational, which featured men's and women's teams from Texas Tech, Oral Roberts and several DII schools, including the Wildcats' old Lone Star Conference rivals from Angelo State, Tarleton State and West Texas A&M.
Senior Taylor Yantis Woods came from behind to win her fourth career heptathlon title with 4,677 points. Junior Ryan Cleary then won his steeplechase debut with a stadium and meet record time of 9:29.58, and in the field events, junior Kenzie Walker Mascorro took first place in the pole vault, reaching a top height of 12 feet - 9.50 inches (3.90m), and sophomore Reagan Mabery won the javelin behind a personal record of 124-04 (37.89m).
Mabery's performance was one of 20 lifetime bests recorded by the Wildcats this weekend, and Taylor Posey's fifth-place effort in the shot put (45-05.25 / 13.85m) ranks her ninth all-time at ACU. Heptathlete Irene Akwitti also cracked the school's all-time performer list, moving into 10th place with 4,240 points.
Woods entered Saturday trailing Texas Tech's Rose Njoku by 170 points but quickly made up ground by beating the Red Raider in the long jump and javelin throw. Woods reached a distance of 16-6 (5.03m) in the long jump, while Njoku's best was measured at 15-3.25 (4.65m). During the javelin, Woods took the lead for good with a launch of 122-01 (37.22m) as Njoku's top throw landed at 104-07 (31.87m).
Minutes after the conclusion of the multis, a full afternoon of running events commenced with the steeplechase races and Cleary excelled from start to finish as he beat runner-up Derek Wieck of West Texas A&M (9:29.58) by nine seconds. Cleary's time currently stands as the best in all the Southland Conference with Grant Williams of Central Arkansas close behind at 9:31.86.
Mabery's effort in the javelin current ranks seventh in the Southland Conference as today she beat 10 other competitors. She reached a distance of 123-5 (37.62m) on her first effort, which still would have been good enough to win, and then she fouled on four of her next six attempts, with her winning toss coming on her fourth try.
Several events later, Mascorro scored ACU's fourth and final victory of the weekend with her pole vault height of 12-9.50. Mascorro first cleared 12-3.5 (3.75m) on her third attempt, and passed over her eventual winning height on her first try before striking out at 13-1.5 (4.00m). Texas Tech's Blake Wood also cleared the bar at 12-9.50, but had two more misses than Mascorro along the way, recording at least one failed attempt at 3.60m, 3.75m and 3.90m.
The Wildcats from there posted only a few more medal-stand showings. McKennon Cecil was second in the javelin with a mark of 163-06 (49.85m), while hammer thrower Ryan Simmons, pole vaulter Jaden Dement and the men's 4x400m relay of Avery Williams, Ryan Linton, Lee-Andrew Bloomfield, Samuel Garcia all placed third.
Simmons recorded a PR of 162-09, Dement reached a height of 15-11 (4.85m) and the relay posted a time of 3:16.62.
The Wildcats return to action next week as each team will be competing at both the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State.
