Wylie's Mascorro ties ACU pole vault record
5/4/2017 9:29:00 AM | Track & Field
ABILENE – Abilene native and Wylie High School graduate Kenzie (Walker) Mascorro tied the ACU school record in the outdoor pole vault Wednesday afternoon during the Wildcats' annual Oliver Jackson Invitational. Competition for ACU included regional teams from UT Arlington, McMurry, Hardin-Simmons and Ranger.
Mascorro's previous best in this event was 13 feet, 1.75 inches (4.01 meters), which she recorded at the 2015 Southland Conference Championships, and yesterday after she cleared both 12-3.5 (3.75m) and 12-9.5 (3.90m) with ease the junior tied Angie Aguilar's school record of 13-3.5 (4.05m) on her second attempt. Aguilar – who has served the team in recent years as a volunteer assistant coach – first set the record in May of 2006, and later tied her own mark at a pair of 2007 meets hosted by UTEP and Drake.
Despite the lifetime best leap for Mascorro, her effort was only good enough for second place as UTA's Helen Falda topped out at 14-1.25 (4.30m). Falda is the top-ranked pole vaulter in the Sun Belt Conference, and her season best jump of 14-4.5 (4.38m) from earlier this spring has her ranked eighth on the NCAA performance list.
Mascorro's jump pushed her into third place within the Southland Conference, while teammate Sophie Morrow – who finished fourth – reached a PR height of 12-3.5 (3.75m) that's tied for 10th all time at ACU (with teammate Mackenzie West) and ranks seventh among all league vaulters.
The Wildcats claimed 11 lifetime bests throughout Wednesday's twilight meet, including two by sophomore thrower Taylor Posey in the shot put and discus. Posey placed second in the shot put with a toss of 46-8.75 (14.24m) that ranks third in the Southland and eighth all-time at ACU. She also placed fifth in the discus with a launch of 131-1 (39.95m).
ACU won seven events at its regular-season home finale, all in the distance and throwing events. Sophomore Reagan Mabery posted a first-place and PR javelin throw of 134-11 (41.12m) that's good for fifth place in the ACU and conference rankings. On the men's side, sophomore McKennon Cecil won the javelin competition with a launch of 177-04 (54.06m), and his classmate Ryan Simmons won the hammer with his toss of 160-7 (48.95m).
The Wildcats ended their evening sessions with sweeps of the 1500m and 5K runs. Carnley Graham (4:46.86) and Ryan Cleary (3:57.94) each were victorious in the 1500m and the 5K crowns were claimed by Sierra Bennett (19:05.65) and John Baker (16:30.25).
ACU's throwers will compete again this Saturday at Texas Tech, but the rest of the team will be off from competition until May 12 when the Wildcats begin a three-day run at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by New Orleans.
