Simmons with three PRs and hammer win at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK – Abilene Christian sophomore thrower Ryan Simmons recorded three lifetime bests and won the hammer throw Saturday at Texas Tech's annual Masked Rider Open. This was final regular-season meet for the Wildcat throwers, who head to New Orleans later this week with the rest of their teammates for the Southland Conference Championships.
ACU's class of throwers won four of eight events with two of those victories attained by redshirts. Annina Brandenburg won the shot put on her sixth and final throw of 47 feet - 9.25 inches (14.56m) and Kayla Melgar was first of nine competitors in the discus, reaching a top distance of 162-10 (49.63m). Brandenburg was second to Melgar with her effort of 159-10 (48.73m).
Reagan Mabery won the javelin and has shown marked improvement in this event the past several weeks, going from 118-8 on April 13 at McMurry to 135-2 (41.20m) yesterday at Texas Tech. Mabery's distance was a personal record that also ranks her fourth among all Southland Conference throwers this spring and fourth in the Wildcat track and field record book.
Simmons was the lone winner on the men's side after he launched the hammer 164-07 (50.16m) on his fifth of six attempts. His previous best of 164-8 (50.20m) was recorded earlier this season at the McMurry Open.
A native of Belton, Texas, Simmons additionally moved up to eighth in the Southland discus rankings with his PR toss of 165-01 (50.31m), and was the runner-up in the javelin as he reached a lifetime best distance of 166-08 (50.79m)
