Food Drive List Provided by Christian Ministries of Abilene
ABILENE – ACU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is teaming up with Christian Ministries of Abilene for a five-day canned-food drive, which will involve the participation of all 14 intercollegiate athletic teams.
The drive runs from Friday, March 1 through Tuesday, March 5, and the team that collects the most pounds of food per student-athlete will be awarded a prize of its choosing. Student-athletes are also encouraged to use #Cats4Cans in all their tweets this weekend in order to raise awareness for their cause and collection efforts.
Public collection points to benefit the pantry will be set up Friday through Sunday at baseball's Crutcher Scott Field, and Saturday night at Moody Coliseum for basketball's doubleheader vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville. Fans who donate at least two items at either men's or women's basketball game will receive a discounted $5 admission.
Becky Almanza, the Community Ministry Administrative Assistant for the Highland Church of Christ, said the pantry serves 350 to 400 of its neighbors on average, but recently hit a high mark this winter of 500 individuals, which includes approximately 300 families. The need for food and basic everyday essentials continues to be great within Abilene, but the pantry's inventory is currently running low and any food it does receive goes fast.
“Right now our shelves are bare,” said Almanza, “and from mid-February through the summer it's very difficult to keep them stocked. Often we have to make purchases from the food bank, but the funds can only last us so long. That's why we're so incredibly appreciative of what the ACU student-athletes are doing for us and I believe their help will go a long way.”
The Christian Ministries of Abilene pantry is especially in need of the following items: chili, beef stew (canned), mayonnaise, peanut butter and jelly, chicken and dumplings (canned), salmon (canned), Spam, shortening, oil and dressings.
Other needed items include canned vegetables and fruits, soups, condiments such as mustard, ketchup and relish, plus sugar, flour and powdered milk. The pantry is also glad to accept non-food items such as toilet paper, diapers (size 4/5) and freezer and quart-sized Ziploc bags.
The pantry, which is located at 701 Walnut, offers food and other commodities once every two months to the citizens of Abilene. Clients are able to select their own food in a ”grocery store” type setting, which helps eliminate waste as they can shop and choose the food that they enjoy.
Volunteer opportunities at Christian Ministries of Abilene include client interviews and referrals, shopping with clients, bagging their food and helping clients carry their groceries to the car, re-stocking shelves, clerical and light office work, clean up, picking up food from the Food Bank and Lawrence Bros., grant writing and fundraising.
